In his introduction, journalist Carey McWilliams, who wrote a 1939 study about migrant farm labor in California ( Factories in the Field), described America Is in the Heart as a “social classic” that reflected on the experiences of Filipino immigrants in America who were searching for the “promises of a better life”. America Is in the Heart, sometimes subtitled A Personal History, is a 1946 semi-autobiographical novel written by Filipino American immigrant poet, fiction writer, short story teller, and activist, Carlos Bulosan. ![]() ![]() ![]() Humans are forced to accept that every tale and monster contained within is real, and they are gathering for war. But where THE SHADOW OF THE GODS was about the blurring line between myth and the mortal world, THE HUNGER OF THE GODS shatters that line completely. Warriors in this world often talk about wanting to be a part of a saga-song, and you can feel that sense of myth in every page of this book. Within the first hundred pages I found myself cackling over what certain characters had done, especially because I don’t see anyway it doesn’t come back to bite them by the end of the series. THE HUNGER OF THE GODS is a bloody sprawling adventure that thrills with the sheer audacity of the feats being accomplished by its characters. But no matter the location or goal, one thing is clear: the gods hunger for vengeance, and no place on the continent will be safe from their wrath. And still others flock to Lik-Rifa’s side, seeing in her the end of three hundred years of enslavement. Still others continue to pursue their own vendettas, determined to rescue loved ones and wreak vengeance on those who stole them. Faced with a being of overwhelming power, some conspire to bind other awesome powers to their whim, a dangerous play to fight a dangerous enemy. The dragon god Lik-Rifa roams the land, and she’s gathering her monstrous children to her side in preparation for war. ![]() The time of the gods is upon us once more. ![]() ![]() She comes in with Bram Lomas, a Terran male who has been impregnated by a Tlic and whose eggs are ready to hatch. Gan’s mother, Lien, initially refuses to drink the egg but she later gives in when T’Gatoi chides her for letting old age catch up with her because the eggs can prolong life. Gan and his family drink the sterile Tlic eggs, which for Terrans have a pleasant, intoxicating and even invigorating effect. T’Gatoi is politically a significant entity in ensuring the safe survival of the Terrans in this alien world. ![]() A Terran named Gan is soon expected to be implanted with the eggs of a female Tlic named T’Gatoi. ![]() ![]() Allnutt's two-man crew has deserted him because of the rumours of war and conscription. ![]() ![]() ![]() But I pushed through, and the tone quickly shifted to the (mostly) breezy styled I’d hope for. The first couple of chapters were more emotional than I’d anticipated, and at first I worried it would be too much for me. The heavy subject matter notwithstanding, I gleaned that the novel’s tone would be fun and light. (However, I was still in Spain when it happened, and I’d only lived in the one country, with two brief trips to France and Italy.) Chelsea may have been affected more noticeably than I was, and her search for love with European exes is its own thing entirely, but regardless, I felt kinship with her based on the book summary alone. (In contrast to her mother’s battle with cancer, my dad died suddenly.) Like Chelsea, I also spent a life-changing year in Europe right before this loss. Like the main character, Chelsea Martin, I lost a parent when I was in my early 20s.
